“Sanga” is more than a word. It’s a philosophy rooted in ancient languages and spiritual traditions.
- In Vaishnavism – it means the meeting point of rivers, a divine union.
- In Tibetan Buddhism – it represents unity and community.
- In Sanskrit – it speaks of friendship, connection, and deep desire.
- In Japanese (山河) – it simply means mountains and rivers.
At CAMP THE SANGA, these meanings converge. Nestled in the Himalayas, at the sacred meeting of mountains and river, we offer a retreat that connects earth and spirit, people and presence.
Camp The Sanga, nestled deep within the embrace of the majestic Himalayan mountains, rests at the sacred confluence of the Chandra and Bhaga Rivers. The Chandra, flowing gently from the southeast, meets the Bhaga, which journeys from the northeast, and together they merge into the eternal Chandrabhaga River, flowing serenely northwest. In its lower reaches, this river transforms into the Chenab, a powerful tributary of the Indus River, joining the Marau River near Bhandera Kot, just a short distance 12 kilometers (7 miles) from Kishtwar Town in Jammu and Kashmir.

The origin of the Chandrabhaga is steeped in a timeless tale of love. It is said that Chandra, the daughter of the moon, and Bhaga, the son of the sun, were drawn to one another in a bond so pure that they chose to walk together, hand in hand, circling the holy peaks of Lahaul. Their journey, long and winding, culminated in a union at Tandi, where their love manifested in the creation of the Chandrabhaga River.
At Camp The Sanga, the air is thick with the whispers of love, unity, and oneness with nature. It is a place where the soul can surrender to the harmony of rivers and mountains, and where every guest is invited to experience the magic of nature’s embrace. Here, the atmosphere fosters learning, healing, and a deep connection to the world around us, offering a sanctuary of peace and togetherness.
